Marzamemi

The ancient fishing village that smells of sea and history

Story

Foundation of Arab origin ("Marsà al Hamen", port of turtle doves), Marzamemi is the quintessential Mediterranean seaside village. Its history revolves entirely around the Tonnara, one of the most important in Sicily, which has dictated the rhythm of life of the community for centuries. The heart of the village is the suggestive Piazza Regina Margherita, surrounded by the low fishermen's houses and ennobled by the Palazzo del Principe di Villadorata. This centre, which has remained suspended in time between the stone and the sea, has been able to transform its industrial fishing heritage into an internationally renowned tourist attraction.

Tradition and Historical FestivalThe most heartfelt festival is that of the Patron Saint, San Francesco di Paola, celebrated in August. On this occasion the village finds its most authentic soul: the statue of the Saint is carried in procession by sea on a fishing boat, followed by a procession of boats. The celebrations include traditional games in the port and the "cuccagna a mare", in an atmosphere of collective joy that involves residents and the many tourists who flock to the village, combining religious devotion with port life.

Gastronomy and Typical Dishes

Marzamemi's gastronomic brand is bluefin tuna in all its forms, with a specialty that represents its noblest soul: Pasta with tuna bottarga and Pachino cherry tomatoes. The bottarga, defined as the "caviar of the Mediterranean", is grated raw on spaghetti sautéed with the cherry tomato, which is born and grows here with a unique sweetness thanks to the proximity of the sea. Another iconic product is the Tuna Salami, which together with mosciame and ventresca, make up the historic appetizers of the tuna fishery, narrating a canning tradition that has no equal on the island.
