Chiaramonte Gulfi
City of oil and eight museums overlooking the Mediterranean.
Story
Known as the "Balcony of Sicily" for its panoramic position that extends from Etna to the sea, Chiaramonte Gulfi is a medieval village that owes its name to Count Manfredi Chiaramonte. Despite the earthquake of 1693, the historic center retains an intact charm, made up of Gothic arches, narrow alleys and stone staircases. The town is internationally famous for the excellent quality of its DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil, extracted from the "Tonda Iblea" variety, which makes this area a global point of reference for fine olive growing.
Tradition and Historical Festival
The religious heart of Chiaramonte beats for the Blessed Virgin Mary of Gulfi, whose celebration begins on the Sunday after Easter. The most exciting rite is the "Salita" (A Sagghiu): the statue of the Madonna is carried on the shoulder in a fast and tiring race along the steep road that leads from the extra-urban sanctuary to the town. It is an impressive test of strength and devotion, marked by the rhythmic cry of the bearers and the sound of the band, which involves the entire population in a climate of profound emotion.
Gastronomy and Typical Dishes
In Chiaramonte Gulfi the famous saying applies: "Nothing about the pig is thrown away". The absolute gastronomic brand is in fact Pork Gelatine (Liattina). It is a laborious preparation that uses poor cuts of pork, cooked for a long time with lemon, vinegar and spices until a very tasty gelatinous mixture is obtained. This dish represents the synthesis of the local peasant culture, which exalts the Chiaramonte pork as supreme excellence, celebrated in typical banquets which also include risotto with pork sauce and seasoned sausage.
