Story
Set in a fertile plain at the foot of the Iblei Mountains, Comiso - defined as a "theatre city" for the beauty of its squares - boasts ancient origins that date back to Roman times, as evidenced by the precious mosaics of the Baths of Diana in the historic centre. The city experienced a splendid flourishing under the Naselli dynasty, whose princes lived in the majestic Castle which still dominates the town today. Elegantly rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, Comiso presents itself as a jewel of light stone, where scenic staircases and majolica domes create an atmosphere of cultured and serene architectural beauty.
Tradition and Historical Festival
The most spectacular celebration is that of Maria SS. Annunziata, celebrated with particular fervor on Easter Sunday. The culminating moment is "A Paci" (Peace): the simulacra of the Annunciation and the Risen Christ are carried on the shoulders by devotees and brought closer several times amidst songs of jubilation and flights of doves, in a rite that symbolizes the meeting between mother and child after the Resurrection. This celebration transforms the squares into a stage of collective joy, where faith mixes with the typical theatricality of the Sicilian tradition.
Gastronomy and Typical Dishes
The gastronomic brand of Comiso is linked to the skill of its butchers and the quality of the meat from the highlands: the symbolic dish is the Salsiccia al Ceppo. It is a sausage prepared rigorously at the tip of a knife on an oak log, seasoned with salt, black pepper, chilli pepper and abundant Iblean wild fennel. It is traditionally roasted on the grill or used to enrich Sunday sauces. Another pillar is the Hot Ricotta, served freshly produced by local shepherds and enjoyed with homemade croutons.
