Kaukana Archaeological Park
Located along the stretch of coast of the municipality of Santa Croce Camarina, the Kaukana site offers a unique glimpse into daily life in the Byzantine period (5th-7th century AD). The "Anticaglie", as they are called locally, include the remains of a settlement that arose as a safe embarkation point after the destruction of Camarina. Here it is possible to observe the plan of approximately 25 buildings, including a small church with three naves with remains of mosaic flooring. What makes Kaukana extraordinary is its position: the archaeological remains are located close to the beach, creating a magical atmosphere where the visitor can walk between the thousand-year-old walls listening to the lapping of the waves.
