Itinerary Description

LOGISTIC PARAMETERS - Duration: 6/7 hours - Departure Point: Torre Cabrera - Guide languages: Italian and English DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIENCE The objective of this tour is to tell the relationship between agricultural production, feudal power and maritime trade in the Hyblaean area. The roots of this history lie in the ancient County of Modica in which Pozzallo developed as a natural landing place for the riches coming from the hinterland: the wheat from the countryside, the carobs, the products of the farms. Here these resources were collected, stored and sent towards the Mediterranean trade routes. ITINERARY: - Archaeological Park of Cava d'Ispica - Origin of the agricultural landscape. The tour begins in the Archaeological Park of Cava d'Ispica. The caves dug into the rock, the necropolises, the rock churches and the agricultural terraces testify to a wise use of the territory linked to the cultivation of cereals and water management. - Cavallo d'Ispica water mill - The transformation of wheat A short distance from the quarry you can visit the Cavallo d'Ispica water mill, one of the very few still functioning in Sicily. The mill uses the power of water to drive the stone millstones, transforming the grain into flour. - Visit to an ancient grains bakery The route continues on the Ispica - Modica road with a stop at a historic bakery that still processes traditional flours and ancient Sicilian grains with the possibility of assisting and even intervening in the bread production process. Experiences: tasting of seasoned bread and other baked products - Modica - Capital of the County In the early afternoon you reach Modica - Heart of the County - "Francesco L. Belgiorno" Civic Museum: contains finds on the agrarian history of the county - Ancient "farmhouse" neighborhoods (Via Tirella, San Giovanni) - Pozzallo and Torre Cabrera – Wheat towards the sea The tour ends in Pozzallo, natural port of the County of Modica. The Cabrera Tower had the task of defending the grain loader and supervising the loading operations.
